CREATING A CUSTOM SCENT IS A GREAT WAY TO REFLECT YOUR PERSONALITY & INDIVIDUALITY!

One of the best compliments you will ever receive when you hug someone is "You smell great!"

The sense of pride and confidence you will feel is palpable when people ask you what you are wearing, and you say: “It’s mine”.  When the fragrance you wear is your very OWN it validates who you are and the choices you make.

The shift in fragrance over the last 40 years reflects socio, economic and political trends and today it is all about Customization!

In the 1970’S, CLASSIC & DESIGNER FRAGRANCES were the rage! Classic fragrances such as Chanel, Arpège, Shalimar, White Shoulders were popular. Fragrances from French and American designers emerged as Designers expanded their fashion brands with fragrances.  “Chloe” by the House of Chloe, “Opium” from Yves St. Laurent, “Obsession” from Calvin Klein were just some of the more popular scents wafting in the air.

In the 1980's and 1990's, Celebrity Scents started to populate with the first major Celebrity fragrance from Elizabeth Taylor: "White Diamonds". Soon thereafter, every Celebrity realized that having their own fragrance would appeal to their fans (and expand their bank balance!)

At the time of the Millennium, the feeling of nostalgia returned with a longing for the 'good old days' and many familiar classic scents enjoyed a resurgence. Chanel has withstood the test of time and still sells well at the holidays.

From 2000 to today, almost every Celebrity from Lady Gaga , Madonna, Kim Kardashian and BeyoncĂ© to Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Pharrell Williams has a fragrance. The proliferation of Celebrity Scents is vast and the fragrance shelves are filled with Celebrity Scents. Every Reality star now has a fragrance and the choice is overwhelming.  Consumers are confused with such an enormous range of scents.

Customization is now becoming popular as consumers are realizing that they can reflect their own individuality and personality with their own scent creation. Their life experiences are unique to them and everything they wear should reflect that. So, why wear what everyone else wears when you can truly create your own scent? Bespoke Perfumery used to be the realm of the wealthy or nobility. Napoleon had his own scent. Fragrance houses such as Caron and Guerlain created bespoke perfumes for royalty and the formula took several months, sometimes even years, to create and the formula was stored in a secret vault.

Today, Custom scents are available to everyone, with companies such as Scenterprises and The Scentarium creating a beautiful, educational, ‘scentertaining’ experience at a fraction of the price.

In an hour, with a Fragrance Expert, you can discover the magic and mystery of fragrance, become fascinated by the history of scent, learn about the vocabulary of fragrance, evaluate a range of exquisite blends and then select 3 or 4 you love, and create your very own fragrance. You can even “name” it and receive a Certificate of Registration authenticating your formula. And, when you are ready to reorder, your creation will be sent to you.  This way, when you walk down the street and are asked “What are you wearing?" you will smile and know that it’s YOURS! Personalization is the new YOU!

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE FRAGRANCE INDUSTRY?

Find out from Sue Phillips, Fragrance Expert who launched TIFFANY, BURBERRY, TRISH McEVOY and fragrances for AVON and more!

In a crowded fragrance market, estimated at between $28billion - $35billion(depending on which research company you follow),  the Celebrity Scent category has now lost it’s bloom!

In just the same way that Social, Political and Economic trends have shaped our past, present and future, Fragrances can reflect those macro trends!

From as early as 1953 Celebrities have aligned themselves with fragrance. The fragrance category was mostly dominated by designers with one of the first, L’interdit by Givenchy, who collaborated with Audrey Hepburn for this iconic fragrance in 1953. Norman Norell launched his fragrance “Norell” in 1968 and then Karl Lagerfeld introduced “Chloe’ in the late 70’s. And who can forget the incredible spicy “Opium” by Yves St Laurent, which personified the 70’s? Then Giorgio Beverly Hills fragrance was launched in 1981 by Fred Hayman and then-wife Gale Hayman with a fanfare normally reserved for a major perfume house launch, and never before seen for an independent boutique brand. Since then the Celebrity category blossomed with Cher’s “Uninhibited’ in 1987 and Elizabeth Taylor’s “White Diamonds” in 1991.

As the economy slowed down in the 90’s the watery, transparent fragrance “L’eau d’Issey” was in sharp contrast to the heavy distinctive florals of the previous decade as consumers pulled back from showy opulence!  And once nostalgia set in as the new millennium began, with a desire for the classics of the past and a resurgence of much-loved classics gained momentum once again with fragrances by Chanel, Dior, Yves St Laurent enjoying popularity.

In the last decade Oud fragrances became popular as perfumers went back to the earliest roots of perfumery and concocted modifications based on oud and incense. And Rose is now becoming the new darling (once again) as the inspiration and epitome of femininity!

Over the last few years, every Celebrity, Actor, Sports figure, Artist , Photographer, Talk Show host and Liquor companies have launched fragrances and the proliferation of celebrity and designer scents continues.  The consumer has become confused with such a large array of fragrances that seem similar.

However, with social media burgeoning, between Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and others, the consumer is now  voicing their thoughts on blogs about fragrance and ‘bespoke’ perfumes is becoming the NEW trend.

Why Custom Perfumery?  Previously once the domain of Royalty and the very wealthy, who wanted an exclusive fragrance for themselves and didn't mind waiting for months or years for it to be developed,  technology has made fragrance development a lot more available. Consumers are now able to enjoy affordable luxurious fragrances for themselves, and don’t have to wear what everyone else wears.  They learn about the magic and mystery of fragrance at seminars and create their own at Scenterprises (www.scenterprises.com)

AUGUST IN THE CITY

Many times I am asked by clients and journalists the question:
"What is the most important aspect of fragrance?" My answer is: "Wear something you love, and something which reflects who you are!" Don't always follow the trend, because the trend might not suit you.

Seasons, Mood, Emotions all play a part in what fragrances people like and will purchase.

On hot days the last thing people want are heavy perfumes and therefore light, refreshing scents are ideal for this time of year. My ideal scents for Summer are crisp, light, refreshing scents with a hint of hyacinth (for sweetness) and sparkling citrus notes from Bergamot, Grapefruit and a hint of lemon and lime. Fruity notes are fine, but be careful that the fruity fragrances don't become too sweet and 'cloying'in the summer, which can detract from the exhilarating feeling of 'fresh and clean' - two of the most sought after characteristics of a fragrance.

The rain yesterday and today in NY are a respite from the sweltering heat and humidity of the"Dog Days of August"! Once the rain clears, there will be an energizing crisp, refreshig scent in the air and like a wonderful large window-wiper, it clears everything away.

We have had some wonderful coverage of our Custom Perfume events and thanks to Charu Suri and her fabulous team of bloggers we have had lovely articles about our TRAVEL SCENTS events.

Here are just a few of them! Enjoy reading about our CUSTOM PERFUME events from bloggers who know!

SNIFF YOUR WAY TO PROFITS!! Multi-Sensory Presentations by Sue Phillips

At my recent presentations for the Luxury Marketing Council in Tampa, West Palm Beach and Miami, I showcased Environmental Scenting Technology, and my focus was all about "Celebrating the Senses".

Many people from all industries are fascinated about the subject of fragrance, but some are a little leery about it because they don't really know much about it or understand it. Today, Scent Marketing is the new branding frontier, and it is a growing industry!

Our Sense of Smell is the strongest sense that we have after Sight and yet it is the most ignored! Without our sense of smell we can’t enjoy food because Scent and Taste are so intertwined, and as a result people get depressed and their lifestyle becomes severely impacted.

Many Fortune 500 companies are now recognizing the power of scent, and as a result are ‘scent-branding’ their properties to create a memorable experience for their guests, and to ensure return visits to their Casinos, Hotels, Spas, and Retail Stores. Even Corporate Event Planners are utilizing Scent to create a multi-sensory experience for their guests, and are incorporating ambient aromas for themed weddings, events, and Special Occasions.

Supermarkets are now enticing customers to buy food by incorporating environmental scent in the air.. and much like the Pavlovian response....when you smell the tantalizing aromas of coffee, delicious roast chickens and scrumptious deserts, the cash registers reflect that craving and start to ring as consumers purchase those items.

Today, ambient scenting can be programmed into individual hotel rooms! By selecting your desired scent when you check in at the front desk of an hotel, you can let them know what fragrance you like, and it can be controlled and activated from the front desk so that when you walk into your room, your favorite scent is already wafting in the room! This is an initiative that has already begun in Paris and we are bringing it to the USA.

Talk about customization and establishing a home-away-from home ambience!

This particular technology was developed in France by whiz guru Yvan Regeard of Exhalia and Scenterprises Ltd is the USA partner. Our environmental scent presentation is compelling and the product is amazing! We can deliver fragrance though computers, DVD’s, Videos and television!
Yes! We have Scent-o-Vision in a delivery system that offers amazing aromas for all kinds of interactive, multi-sensory video games, computer programs and TV cooking shows. We have interest from every major fragrance company and also from national Television shows for this application.
We offer 3 product lines to diffuse perfume interactively in association with multimedia contents:
• Scent Marketing products- for fragrance sampling; point of purchase programs, and store events;

• Hospitality Systems product line - Systems for olfactory marketing professionals and for air treatment,

• Home Systems product line-- wonderful ambient home systems

Today there are many wonderful delivery systems from a range of companies for all types of spaces: small, large and medium areas. There are nebulizers which diffuse liquid into vapor which is barely discernible; diffusion through scented pellets with fans; Saturated Pads that are placed in Scent Cubes where the air flow draws in the air and then diffuses it through the fan; Scented Gels which are diffused through digital scent technology through which the scent is synchronized with software and activated via the sound and images in videos and TV television.

The digital world is realizing that the use of fragrance for interactive video games such as “World of Warcraft”, TV Cooking Channels and Flower and Garden shows are much more experiential if the viewer can actually smell the wonderful aromas from their computers, DVD’s, Videos and Television!

Fragrance, Aroma, Scent, Perfume….. Whichever name you give it, it is the new marketing frontier for branding, and goes beyond just applying it to a lady’s wrists or pulse-points! It is the most powerful SENSE we have that triggers memories and emotions. Today Fragrance can seduce us olfactively, personally and environmentally!

Inhale, Apply, Enjoy and you and your clients will also Sniff their way to profits!!!
